Rehabilitation & Layups

  • Racehorses-
  • Showhorses
  • Pleasure Horses-
  • High Maintenance Retirees

Why?

Sometimes just rest or turnout is not the answer to an equine injury. Rest alone does not always sufficiently prepare a horse to go back to work. A gradual monitored "active" rehabilitation program encourages the horse's body to heal, model and adapt itself to the forces and stress that will be placed upon it when returned to work.

Turnout is not a controlled environment and horses can continually reinjure themselves.

Our program strives to safely and gradually bring the horse back to work. We strive to reduce healing time and the chance of reinjury. We encourage a team effort with the vet, farrier, trainer and owner.

These programs can yield a return on investment if the horse can be brought back to soundness rather than retired or if reinjury can be prevented.

Methods-

  • Good Old Horsemanship-We have a small stable so experienced hands will go over your horse every day.
  • Hot/Cold Therapy-These basics go a long way.
  • Controlled Exercise-When applicable, controlled exercise encourages tissue to heal in line with the activity the horse will eventually perform. It prevents muscle atrophy and is good for their minds.
  • Electro-magenetic Field Therapy-Increases blood flow, enhances healing and inhibits muscle atrophy
  • Laser-Encourages healing, pain relief, reduced swelling
  • Ultrasound-Encourages healing, softens scar tissue, increased range of motion, reduced spasm
  • Bandaging/Compression-Controls edema, prevents reinjury, supports internal structures.
  • Massage
  • Chiropractic
  • Therapeutic Shoeing
